The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed that it is moving forward with the investigation into allegations of corruption raised by billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote against the former Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Alhaji Farouk Ahmed, insisting that Ahmed’s resignation does not stop the probe.
Dangote has been invited to appear before the commission or be represented by his lawyer, Ogwu Onoja (SAN), to formally adopt his petition and submit documents and evidence supporting claims of corruption, misappropriation of funds, and the alleged expenditure of over $7 million on the education of Ahmed’s four children in Switzerland.
On Friday, the ICPC established a panel of senior investigators specifically to handle Dangote’s petition, highlighting the seriousness of the case. Sources at the commission confirmed that once the petition is formally adopted, the ICPC will isolate issues, summon Ahmed for response, and ensure that due process is followed.
A source explained, “The resignation of Ahmed does not affect this probe, which is in the public interest. He who alleges must provide evidence, and the ICPC will act fairly toward all parties.”
Dangote’s petition, dated December 16, accuses Ahmed of:
- Corruption and illicit enrichment.
- Abuse of office and diversion of public funds for personal use.
- Spending public money on his children’s education abroad, which allegedly exceeds his lawful earnings as a public servant.
Dangote has provided details of the four children, their schools, and the amounts paid for each, urging the ICPC to verify the claims and establish evidence of corrupt enrichment. He also highlighted alleged misuse of the NMDPRA to frustrate local refining efforts through fuel import licences.
Under Section 19 of the ICPC Act 2000, public officers found guilty of such offences face up to five years imprisonment without the option of a fine. The ICPC stressed that frivolous or malicious petitions may also attract penalties.
Dangote has indicated his willingness to personally appear before investigators to present all relevant evidence.
