Igbo Youth Leaders Reject Nnamdi Kanu’s Transfer to Sokoto Prison

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has rejected the Federal Government’s decision to transfer Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to the Sokoto State Correctional Center.

Kanu, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday for terrorism-related charges, was moved to Sokoto prison shortly after.

In a statement issued Saturday, COSEYL President General Goodluck Ibem expressed concerns over Kanu’s safety in a region vulnerable to terrorist activity.

“Parts of the North West, including Sokoto State, face ongoing threats from groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, bandits, and other insurgents. The security environment is fragile, with high-profile targets and security personnel frequently attacked. Placing Nnamdi Kanu in such a setting is dangerous and could have serious consequences for his safety and for national security,” the statement said.

COSEYL called on the Federal Government to relocate Kanu to Abuja or another secure facility where robust protection can be guaranteed. The coalition also urged authorities to conduct a transparent security risk assessment prior to any further movements, ensuring the safety of the inmate and the integrity of the justice process.

“The safety of Nnamdi Kanu, the integrity of the justice process, and the security of the country must not be compromised. Authorities should prioritize life and security and communicate clearly with the public on this matter,” the statement added.
