Ilia Topuria Cites ‘False Domestic Abuse Allegations’ and Extortion Attempt for UFC 324 Withdrawal

UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has publicly addressed his absence from UFC 324, saying his decision to step away from competition is linked to what he describes as an attempted extortion involving false allegations of domestic abuse.

The undefeated fighter made the announcement in a detailed statement shared on Instagram on Monday, aiming to clarify weeks of speculation surrounding his sudden break from the sport. Topuria confirmed that the issue is personal and legal in nature—not related to injury—and said he plans to return to the octagon once the situation is resolved.

“A Decision I Did Not Take Lightly”

“Over the past several weeks, I have made the difficult decision to temporarily step away from defending my title,” Topuria wrote.
“This was not a decision I took lightly. However, when circumstances arise that threaten your personal integrity, your family, and your reputation, there comes a point when you must address them directly.”

Topuria said the situation escalated to a level that required his full attention, prompting him to pause his UFC career in November 2025.

Allegations Described as Extortion Attempt

In his statement, the 28-year-old Georgian fighter alleged that he was subjected to pressure and threats involving the release of false domestic abuse claims unless financial demands were met.

Topuria strongly denied the allegations, saying they are “entirely unfounded” and part of a broader effort to extort him.

“The truth is not a matter of opinion—it is a matter of evidence,” he said.

He added that audio recordings, written messages, witness statements, and video material have been collected and submitted to judicial authorities. According to Topuria, legal action is being pursued for attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and personal property, and repeated threats.

UFC 324 Proceeds Without the Champion

As a result of Topuria’s absence, he will not defend his lightweight title at UFC 324, scheduled for January 24, 2026, in Paradise, Nevada.

Instead, the event will be headlined by an interim lightweight title bout between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett, with the UFC opting to keep the division active during the champion’s hiatus.

Topuria, who holds a professional record of 17–0, previously dismissed reports that an injury was the reason for his withdrawal.

A Historic Rise in the UFC

Topuria has been one of the UFC’s most dominant fighters in recent years. He captured the lightweight title in February 2024 with a knockout victory over Alexander Volkanovski, then successfully defended the belt twice—both by knockout.

His most recent appearance came on June 28, 2025, when he defeated Charles Oliveira at UFC 317. That win made him the first undefeated two-division champion in UFC history.

Topuria has held titles in two weight classes and is currently ranked as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC, a status that has made his absence from competition particularly notable.

Return Expected After Legal Matters Resolved

Despite stepping away, Topuria made it clear that his break from MMA is temporary. He emphasized his commitment to returning to the octagon once the legal process concludes and his name is fully cleared.

For now, the champion says his priority is protecting his family, reputation, and personal integrity—while allowing the legal system to address the allegations he says are false.
