Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy (Damini Ogulu) has revealed that he is dealing with personal battles in private, amid backlash over recent comments about his fans.
The singer sparked controversy after joking that he does not beg anyone to be his fan and that he prefers wealthy fans. Many interpreted the remarks negatively, prompting widespread online criticism.
Responding via his Instagram story, Burna Boy explained that his comment was meant as a joke and was taken out of context. He urged the public to respect his privacy, stressing that he is fighting personal struggles without seeking sympathy or assistance.
He wrote:
“I was joking around with my band about something else, not this situation, and y’all have spun it as usual saying ‘Burna Boy doesn’t love his fans.’ If you hate me so much, either kill me or leave me alone. I’m fighting my own battles and I never come out here to look for pity or help. I love who loves me and respect who respects me. Free Sudan, free Congo, free Nigeria.”
In addition, Burna Boy lent his voice to calls for an end to insecurity and terrorism in Nigeria, Congo, and Sudan, highlighting his concern for global issues beyond his personal life.
