Legal practitioner Liborous Oshoma has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to go beyond merely defending election petitions and take proactive steps to prosecute electoral offenders.
Speaking on Arise Television on Wednesday, Oshoma said INEC can only fulfil its commitment to ending courtroom battles over election outcomes by enforcing accountability and ensuring transparency in the electoral process.
He commended the INEC Chairman’s recent pledge to make elections more credible and less litigious, describing it as a welcome development that must translate into tangible reforms.
“Everybody wants to see a Nigeria where elections are decided by the electorate, not the courts,” Oshoma said. “We all look forward to a day when INEC announces results and everyone shakes hands and goes home. But it must go beyond rhetoric — we’ve heard similar promises from past chairmen.”
Oshoma stressed that sustained enforcement of electoral laws and prosecution of offenders would restore public confidence and reduce post-election disputes across the country.
