DUBAI, November 16, 2025 – Iran’s government indicated on Sunday that Washington is not prepared for equal and fair negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear programme, following comments from U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting potential discussions. The warning underscores persistent tensions between the two nations over Iran’s nuclear activities and broader regional security issues.
Iran’s Position on Nuclear Negotiations
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that the current approach from the United States does not signal readiness for genuine dialogue, emphasizing that Tehran will not participate in negotiations designed to dictate terms. Speaking at the conference “International Law Under Assault” in Tehran, Araqchi said:
“The U.S. cannot expect to gain what it couldn’t in war through negotiations. Iran will always be prepared to engage in diplomacy, but not negotiations meant for dictation.”
Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh echoed this view, accusing Washington of using talks as a show to pursue wartime objectives rather than achieving a mutually acceptable agreement.
Background: Nuclear Tensions and Past Talks
The United States, along with its European allies and Israel, has repeatedly accused Tehran of using its nuclear programme as a cover for weapons development. Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is strictly for peaceful purposes.
Before the 12-day war triggered by Israel and U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025, Tehran and Washington conducted five rounds of indirect nuclear negotiations. Key sticking points included Iran’s domestic uranium enrichment, which the U.S. demands Iran halt as a condition for any agreement.
Implications for U.S.-Iran Relations
The comments from Iranian officials suggest that renewed nuclear talks face significant hurdles, with Tehran insisting on equal footing in negotiations. Analysts note that the diplomatic path remains fragile, as both countries navigate post-conflict tensions, regional security concerns, and ongoing scrutiny from international actors regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
While President Trump has indicated willingness to engage in dialogue, Iran’s stance signals that any future talks must respect sovereign decision-making and avoid attempts to impose conditions through pressure or coercion.
