“It’s an Insult to Fela” – Seun Kuti Slams Wizkid Fans Over Comparisons

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has sparked controversy online after criticizing fans of Nigerian superstar Wizkid for comparing the singer to his late father, Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.

Seun described such comparisons as disrespectful and misleading, warning that attempts to label Wizkid as the “new Fela” are an appropriation of Fela’s cultural and musical legacy.

In a fiery statement, Seun said:

“Wizkid FC needs to keep Fela’s name out of their mouth. You people try to steal the man’s image. You try to claim your fake artiste is the new Fela. It’s an insult to Fela to call Wizkid the new Fela. Wizkid FC are the most ignorant fanbase in the world.”

The comments have ignited a heated debate online, dividing opinions between Afrobeat purists who defend Fela’s unmatched influence, and Wizkid supporters who argue for the singer’s modern global appeal.

Seun emphasized that Fela’s cultural, political, and musical impact cannot be replicated or rebranded through contemporary pop stardom, reinforcing the enduring uniqueness of his father’s legacy.
