Nollywood actress and filmmaker Iyabo Ojo has stirred conversation after claiming that men are increasingly chasing single mothers, signaling a shift in societal attitudes.
Speaking at a colleague’s party, the mother of two, who humorously calls herself the “President General of the Single Mothers Association,” said the stigma surrounding single motherhood is fading. She highlighted that children raised by single mothers are thriving, which she believes contributes to the newfound attention from men.
“Gone are the days that being a single mother was a stigma. Single mothers’ children are doing great things in life. Men are chasing single mothers. They are even begging us not to be side chicks. They want us to marry them because we have experience. If a man leaves you, another man will accept you,” Iyabo Ojo said.
The statement has sparked mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians questioning her endorsement of single motherhood as a lifestyle, particularly for younger women. Social media users raised concerns about the message being sent to her own daughter, Priscilla, and young women in general.
Amid the controversy, Iyabo Ojo’s family continues to draw attention. Her daughter Priscilla and son-in-law Juma Jux recently held a music concert in Lagos attended by fans and celebrities, while the family was also spotted supporting actress Toyin Abraham at the premiere of Oversabi Aunty.
Despite the criticism, Iyabo’s comments have fueled a broader discussion about societal perceptions of single mothers and the evolving role of women in Nigerian society.
