Learning the News Alongside Nathan Lane
Ferguson revealed that at the time, he happened to be with Nathan Lane, who had a recurring role on Modern Family as Pepper Saltzman and famously starred alongside Williams in the 1996 film The Birdcage.
“I was with Nathan Lane, he was working on Modern Family when we found out that Robin Williams had passed away,” Ferguson said. He recalled asking Lane, “Did you ever work with him? Did you know him?” Lane confirmed, “He played my husband on The Birdcage,” which immediately struck Ferguson.
“I was like, oh my God. That’s right. [The Birdcage] is one of my favorite films,” Ferguson continued. “But I was just sort of in shock.”
Remembering Robin Williams’ Impact
Robin Williams, beloved actor and comedian, tragically died at age 63 on August 11, 2014, at his Paradise Cay mansion in San Francisco. Josh Hutcherson Recalls Working With Williams
Ferguson’s podcast guest, Josh Hutcherson, who starred alongside Williams in the 2006 film RV, also shared his memories of the legendary comedian.
“I grew up loving him. When I said Jumanji, it was one that made me want to do this or realize that I could,” Hutcherson recalled. “Robin was someone that brought joy to everyone around him. He was just a joy to be around and the funniest person I’ve ever seen in my life. On set, the energy was at a level 1,000 — he was such a great role model for a 12-year-old to be around.”
