Jimmy Thelin Leaves Aberdeen After Winless Run Despite Scottish Cup Glory

Aberdeen have parted ways with manager Jimmy Thelin following a five-match winless streak in the Scottish Premiership.

The 47-year-old Swede, who led the Dons to their first Scottish Cup triumph in 35 years last May, said he “accepts this decision” and takes “my share of responsibility.” His tenure ended with Aberdeen eighth in the league after Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Falkirk.

“Results ultimately decide the tenure of this profession, and as such I take my share of responsibility,” Thelin said. “Football doesn’t always allow time for belief to become results. I leave wishing success to everyone involved.”

First-team coach Peter Leven will take interim charge starting with Tuesday’s trip to Rangers. Assistant manager Christer Persson is also departing. Sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel will oversee the appointment of a permanent successor.

Thelin’s Rollercoaster Reign

Thelin joined Aberdeen in summer 2024 and initially impressed, winning 14 and drawing one of his opening 15 games. However, heavy defeats to Celtic, inconsistent league form, and poor European results—including a 6-0 loss at AEK Athens and 3-0 defeat to Sparta Prague—marked a downturn. Across all competitions since the Scottish Cup final, Thelin won just eight of 30 games.

Chairman Dave Cormack acknowledged Thelin’s historic Scottish Cup success but stated that recent performances “have fallen below the required standard despite significant investment.”

Looking Ahead

Aberdeen are now searching for their 26th permanent manager since Derek McInnes’ long tenure ended in 2021. The club faces Rangers next Sunday under interim boss Leven, with Pfannenstiel leading the global search for Thelin’s successor.
