Bernard Doro officially assumed duty as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction on Tuesday, following his appointment by President Bola Tinubu. He succeeds Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who now serves as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Doro was received at the ministry by the Minister of State, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Yakubu Kofarmata, and other staff members, alongside his wife, Dr. Naomi Doro, and well-wishers.
In his address to ministry officials and agency heads, Doro outlined his vision, pledging to lift over 60% of Nigerians experiencing multidimensional poverty. He emphasized collaboration with staff to achieve President Tinubu’s agenda of “making hope a reality” for vulnerable Nigerians.
“I have lived in the UK for over two decades, so there will be some adjustments, but by leveraging your experience, technical knowledge, and my willingness to learn, we can take this ministry to greater heights,” Doro said.
Highlighting the scale of the challenge, he added, “This country has over 60% of people who are multi-dimensionally poor. It is our job to help them move up from where they are. We can achieve social mobility through collaboration, accountability, and selflessness.”
Doro also stressed the importance of trust, teamwork, and cultural understanding within the ministry, describing the staff as a family ready to support him in implementing his plans.
“This is a big shoe to fill, but I have experienced individuals around me, and together we will not only step into the shoe but walk comfortably in it,” he said.
