The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced steps to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in a move that has stirred political attention across the state.
The Assembly, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, reversed an earlier decision to resume plenary on January 26, instead scheduling the reconvening for Thursday, January 8, 2026. The resumption was communicated to members through an internal memo signed by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi, dated January 5. The memo instructed members to treat the notice with “utmost importance” and attend the sitting at 10:00 a.m.
During Thursday’s plenary, presided over by Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read the formal notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Governor Fubara. The notice, signed by 26 members of the House, claims the Governor violated provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. The Speaker confirmed that the notice will be officially served to Fubara within seven days.
In a related development, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, also read allegations of gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, indicating potential broader proceedings within the state executive.
The Assembly’s actions signal heightened political tensions in Rivers State as the impeachment process formally begins.
