Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry’s Romance Heats Up: ‘They Have an Easy Connection’

Katy Perry, 40, and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, 53, are reportedly growing closer, with sources describing their connection as “easy” and natural. The pair were first linked romantically in July following a night out in Montreal, and were most recently spotted sharing a kiss on a yacht off the coast of Santa Barbara, according to photos published October 12.

A source close to Perry told PEOPLE that although she wasn’t initially looking to date when she first spent time with Trudeau, the two stayed in touch. “They have many shared interests and a lot to talk about, but Katy was navigating too many things to even think about dating then,” the source explained. Perry, who split from fiancé Orlando Bloom, 48, this summer amid her international Lifetimes Tour, shares a 5-year-old daughter, Daisy, with Bloom.

Since their first meeting in Montreal, Trudeau has “been pursuing her,” the source added. “He even flew to California to see her during a tour break. They have an easy connection. She finds him attractive. He’s been very respectful.”

Trudeau and Perry first sparked rumors of romance in July when they were photographed strolling with a dog and grabbing drinks at Montreal’s Taverne Atlantic. Later that evening, they had dinner at the popular Le Violon restaurant. Two days later, Trudeau attended Perry’s Lifetimes Tour concert at Montreal’s Bell Centre, further fueling speculation about their budding relationship.

At the time, a source described their bond as an “instant connection.” “They are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes,” the insider said. “She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common … Both are idealists and still live in a world where they think they can make improvements, although it has gotten more difficult.”

Neither Perry nor Trudeau has publicly commented on the status of their relationship. Reps for both declined to respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Perry confirmed her split from Bloom in June, following a nine-year on-again, off-again engagement. Their representatives stated that the two were focusing on co-parenting their daughter, emphasizing that “their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.”

Trudeau, meanwhile, announced his separation from ex-wife Sophie Grégoire in 2023. The former couple shares three children: Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrian.
