NewJeans, one of the biggest names in K-pop, has lost a key member as their long-running dispute with record label Ador reaches a dramatic turning point. Danielle Marsh’s contract termination on Monday effectively ends the possibility of a full five-member reunion, leaving fans and industry observers shocked.
Legal Battle with Ador
The group’s troubles began in 2024 when NewJeans announced their departure from Ador, citing allegations of workplace harassment, which the agency denied. The dispute culminated in a court ruling in October 2025, ordering the band to remain under contract with Ador until 2029.
Initially, all five members—Haerin, Hyein, Hanni, Minji, and Marsh—pledged to return to the label following the ruling. However, Ador’s Monday statement confirmed that Danielle Marsh would not continue with the group.
Fan Backlash
Fans immediately reacted on social media, emphasizing that “NewJeans is five or nothing.” Many expressed outrage over Marsh being singled out:
- “Does this make any sense??? NewJeans without Danielle isn’t NewJeans,” wrote one fan on X.
- “It’s not fair at all. Free NewJeans (all 5 members),” commented another on Instagram.
Marsh has not publicly addressed her contract termination.
The Agency’s Position
Ador also announced legal action against former CEO Min Hee-jin and one of Marsh’s family members, claiming they “bear significant responsibility” for the fallout. The label maintained that the members were exposed to “persistently distorted and biased information,” resulting in “significant misunderstandings” about the company.
Ador confirmed that Hanni will remain with the agency, while Minji is in ongoing discussions. The future of Hyein and Haerin’s full participation remains unclear.
Impact on the Group and Industry
Music critic Lim Hee-yun called the news a major setback:
“NewJeans is a very important group that changed the world of female K-pop acts. The hope to see them return as a full five-member team is no longer possible.”
Lim noted that K-pop groups often rely heavily on the chemistry between members, making success challenging for smaller formations. Marsh’s next steps in music or entertainment remain uncertain, with potential opportunities in solo music, acting, modeling, or social media.
NewJeans’ Rise and Legacy
Since debuting in July 2022, NewJeans has achieved global success, blending 1990s R&B with catchy pop melodies. Within a year, they were the eighth biggest-selling act worldwide, and critics hailed them as “game-changers” for female K-pop acts.
The 2024 fallout was fueled by the controversial dismissal of former Ador CEO Min Hee-jin, whom the group considered a mentor. Their public departure announcement accused Ador of “mistreatment” and manipulation, prompting a legal battle that concluded with the court ruling in favor of the label.
