Nearly a quarter-century after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (KKHH) became a cultural phenomenon and defined a generation of Bollywood romance, filmmaker and producer Karan Johar has shared his vision for a modern reimagining of the iconic film. In a candid conversation with Sania Mirza for Myntra’s Glam Stream, Johar revealed which contemporary actors he would cast if he were to bring the story to life for today’s audiences. Surprisingly, some of Bollywood’s current biggest stars, including Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Kiara Advani, do not figure in his lineup.
According to Karan, the role of Anjali would be essayed by Alia Bhatt, Rahul by Ranveer Singh, and Tina by Ananya Panday. He also mentioned that the role of Tina could potentially go to Janhvi Kapoor or Sara Ali Khan, playfully referring to the new generation of star kids as “younger nepo babies.” Johar clarified that his casting choices are based purely on instinct and suitability for the roles, rather than familial connections, stressing that he has never hired anyone simply because of their parentage. “I know they are nepo babies. I’ve seen them grow up in front of me. But none of their parents have ever called me. I have always been the one to call,” he said. He also noted that even some actors have declined his offers in the past.
The conversation with Sania Mirza also reflected on Dharma Productions’ evolution over the decades. Johar traced the studio’s journey from its early days with Dostana in 1980 under Yash Johar’s banner, through periods of struggle with films like Duniya and Agneepath, to the massive success of his directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, in 1998. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, KKHH not only revived the studio but also paved the way for blockbuster hits like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, firmly establishing Dharma Productions as a major force in Bollywood. Today, the studio is valued at over ₹2,000 crore, reflecting its enduring influence on the industry.
While Karan has not yet directed the new-generation actors in full-length films, fans have had a glimpse of what the remake could look like. Ananya Panday, Janhvi Kapoor, and Sara Ali Khan made brief appearances in his recent hit Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, specifically in the song “Heart Throb,” sparking speculation about the chemistry and energy they could bring to a modern KKHH.
Johar’s remarks also came at a time when discussions around nepotism continue to dominate Bollywood. By addressing the topic openly, he highlighted that his decisions are based on talent, suitability for roles, and the ability of actors to embody the characters authentically, rather than relying on star parentage alone.
Looking ahead, Karan Johar has an ambitious slate of projects under the Dharma Productions banner, illustrating his intent to explore diverse genres while nurturing new talent. One such project is the romantic drama Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, which is slated for release in early 2026. In addition, he is producing the high-concept fantasy-comedy Naagzilla, also featuring Kartik Aaryan in the lead role, scheduled for release in August 2026.
With the remake of KKHH on the horizon, Karan Johar is signaling a blend of nostalgia and fresh energy—paying homage to the film that defined his early directorial career while introducing a new generation of actors to reinterpret some of Bollywood’s most beloved characters. As audiences eagerly await more details, the excitement surrounding both the cast and the story continues to build, promising a modern take on a classic romance that left an indelible mark on Indian cinema.
