Kerala Holds First Phase of Local Body Elections Amid Political Heat

Kerala, Dec 9, 2025 — Voting began at 7 am in seven districts—Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam—for the first phase of crucial local body elections, seen as a barometer for next year’s state assembly polls.

By 9:30 am, voter turnout crossed 14.5%, with citizens from all walks of life, including actors Asif Ali and Renji Panicker, participating.

The opposition UDF expressed confidence of a “historic win,” citing anti-incumbency sentiment and controversies like the Sabarimala gold issue. Leader VD Satheesan also addressed allegations against expelled MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, saying swift action prevented the matter from affecting polls.

The ruling LDF, led by CPI(M), remained optimistic, citing development work and welfare initiatives. The BJPcampaigned aggressively, emphasising religious issues, including Sabarimala temple administration.

Second phase covers Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur, Wayanad, and Kasaragod on Dec 11. Over 1.32 crore voters are deciding the fate of 75,632 candidates across 23,576 wards, with results for all 1,199 local bodies expected on Dec 13.
