As KPop Demon Hunters continues to dominate pop culture, fans are naturally curious: could we one day see Rumi, Mira, and Zoey brought to life in a live-action adaptation? According to the film’s co-directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the answer is a resounding no.
Why a Live-Action Adaptation “Wouldn’t Work”
In a recent interview with the BBC, Maggie Kang, the Korean-Canadian co-writer and co-director, explained that the tone, comedy, and fantastical elements of the film are perfectly suited for animation. “It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world,” Kang said. She noted that having real-life actors portray the anime-inspired HUNTR/X members “would feel too grounded,” and ultimately, “totally wouldn’t work for me.”
Chris Appelhans, co-director and illustrator-filmmaker, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the creative freedom animation provides. “One of the great things about animation is that you make these composites of impossibly great attributes,” he explained. “Rumi can be this goofy comedian, then singing and doing a spinning back-kick a second later, and then free-falling through the sky.” He added that past attempts to adapt anime projects into live-action often end up feeling “stilted,” losing the energy and exaggeration that make animation so compelling.
The Power of Animated Storytelling
Animation allows the filmmakers to push boundaries in ways live-action simply cannot replicate. From exaggerated action sequences to impossible stunts and hyper-expressive performances, KPop Demon Hunters uses its animated format to elevate the story of HUNTR/X — the world-famous K-pop girl group who secretly hunt demons. Kang and Appelhans’ vision relies on this blend of music, action, and comedy, elements that would be significantly constrained by live actors.
Record-Breaking Success on Netflix
Since its release, KPop Demon Hunters has shattered records, becoming Netflix’s most-watched film of all time as of August 26, 2025. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and distributed by Netflix, the movie generated massive buzz with No.-1 chart hits, a Saturday Night Live homage, and even a limited singalong theatrical release.
The movie’s popularity has also translated to its soundtrack, which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Soundtracks chart and produced multiple Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, showcasing the real-world impact of HUNTR/X beyond the animated screen.
Sequel Possibilities
While a live-action adaptation is off the table, Kang has expressed interest in exploring more animated stories. Speaking with Variety in July 2025, she shared her enthusiasm for a sequel, noting that the original film left many unanswered questions and hints for future backstory.
At the Busan International Film Festival in September, Kang reiterated that while there’s no official word on a sequel yet, the creative team remains excited about potential new stories in the KPop Demon Hunters universe.
Why Fans Should Stick with Animation
For now, fans can enjoy the unique blend of music, action, comedy, and fantastical elements that make the animated format ideal for KPop Demon Hunters. The combination of HUNTR/X’s dynamic performances, over-the-top stunts, and exaggerated character expressions would be difficult to replicate with live-action actors — a point both Kang and Appelhans made clear.
KPop Demon Hunters continues to stream on Netflix, giving fans worldwide the chance to experience why animation was the perfect choice for this record-breaking K-pop and demon-hunting phenomenon.
