Kremlin Says President Putin Does Not Use AI Personally, But Officials Do

MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin does not personally use artificial intelligence (AI) tools, the Kremlin clarified on Thursday. However, officials working under him reportedly employ AI technology to assist with administrative and public-facing functions, including sorting citizens’ questions during the annual presidential Q&A event.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that AI is used operationally by staff rather than by Putin himself. The clarification follows remarks by Putin on Wednesday calling for the creation of a national task force to coordinate Russia’s development of homegrown generative AI models. The president described such technology as critical to preserving Russia’s technological and digital sovereignty.

AI Demonstrations Highlight Technological Advancements

During the same week, an AI-powered robot performed a dance for Putin at an exhibition organized by Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank. The event aimed to showcase the bank’s advancements in artificial intelligence and other technological innovations, underscoring the growing role of AI in Russian corporate and governmental projects.

Putin’s push for AI development aligns with broader global trends emphasizing the strategic importance of artificial intelligence in governance, industry, and national security. By encouraging state-led AI initiatives, the Kremlin aims to reduce dependence on foreign AI technologies while promoting domestic innovation.

Implications for Russia’s AI Strategy

While Putin himself does not directly use AI tools, the government’s deployment of artificial intelligence demonstrates a significant institutional focus on leveraging technology to streamline administrative processes, enhance public engagement, and develop sovereign AI capabilities. Analysts suggest that these steps are part of Russia’s broader strategy to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving global AI landscape.
