The Kwara State House of Assembly has suspended Saba Gideon, the lawmaker representing Edu State Constituency, for three months following allegations that he secretly recorded a closed-door meeting and shared the audio with an unauthorized person.
The matter came to light during Thursday’s plenary session, where lawmakers said Gideon admitted to the act. The motion for suspension was moved without prior notice by the House Leader, Abdulkadir Magaji, who cited Order 4, Rule 14 of the House Rules on Privileges and Section 14(2) of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act, 2017.
Magaji stated:
“Hon. Saba did something that can put this honourable House in jeopardy by sending sensitive information about its activities to the public.”
Several lawmakers, including Ganiyu Salaudeen, Musa Kareem, Owolabi Rasaq, Abdullahi Danbaba, and Oniboki Yunusa, condemned the action, noting that the breach of trust could harm the integrity of the legislative institution.
Reading the House resolution, Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu described Gideon’s conduct as contempt and a breach of privilege, directing the suspended lawmaker to submit a written apology within the three-month suspension period.
The suspension took effect immediately.
