Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has called for increased welfare support, consistent financial aid, and empowerment programmes for widows of fallen members of the armed forces, describing these initiatives as vital to honouring the sacrifices of those who protect the nation.
Dr. Hamzat spoke during a Jumat Service held in observance of the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, marked annually on January 15. He urged the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to strengthen efforts in assisting vulnerable widows left behind by military personnel.
The deputy governor also addressed global misconceptions linking Muslims to terrorism, stressing that Islam is a religion of peace. He noted, “If you harm another person, you are not acting in line with Islam. The Qur’an teaches that harming one individual is like harming the entire community. No true Muslim intentionally injures others.” He encouraged Muslim leaders to promote educational and awareness programmes to counter negative stereotypes.
During the service, Imam Saheed Ahmad, who led the prayers, emphasised that security is a shared responsibility. “Everyone’s responsible behaviour strengthens community safety and reduces the burden on security agencies. Every law-abiding citizen contributes to a safer society,” he said.
The Imam also honoured the armed forces for their sacrifices, urging prayers and recognition for their dedication, while cautioning against the spread of rumours and unverified information that could endanger public safety.
