Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, has emphasized that no society can thrive without a cordial relationship between youths and law enforcement agencies. He made the remarks at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Police Youth Dialogue in Agidingbi, Ikeja.
Ogunlende stressed the importance of understanding between the two groups and reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to youth-oriented initiatives that keep young people engaged while strengthening the Lagos State Security Trust Fund to ensure a safe environment for all residents.
Guest speaker Muiz Banire highlighted the necessity of police presence for societal stability but noted that mutual responsibility is key.
“We need police for a sane society. Every society that desires security, peace, and progress cannot do without police. While law enforcement agencies should not abuse power or violate human rights, youths should know their rights according to our constitution. No right is absolute. What we need is partnership,” he said.
Oba Omogbolahan Lawal, Oniru of Iru Kingdom, identified factors such as socio-economic frustration, weak civic culture, stereotyping, and profiling as causes of distrust between youths and law enforcement agencies.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mrs. Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, explained that the dialogue was part of ongoing efforts to foster collaboration:
“Youths and law enforcement agencies cannot afford to be at loggerheads. There is a need for partnership. This is why the ministry is organising this third edition of the dialogue, in line with the vision of the governor.”
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Moshood Jimoh, assured youths of active engagement and announced plans to establish a Youth Advisory Council to address issues affecting young people in the state.
The 2025 Police Youth Dialogue underscores Lagos State’s commitment to building trust, fostering collaboration, and ensuring a peaceful, secure environment through proactive engagement with its youth population.
