Lakers Struggle Without Key Players
The Los Angeles Lakers saw their five-game winning streak snapped in a 122-102 blowout loss to the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena on Saturday. Missing key contributors, including Austin Reaves, the Lakers struggled to keep pace despite a strong first-half effort from Luka Doncic, who finished with 22 points, 11 assists, and five rebounds.
By the middle of the third quarter, Atlanta had built a 25-point lead, forcing coach JJ Redick to sit most of his starters. The Lakers, now 7-3, will need to rebound quickly as their road trip continues with a matchup against Charlotte on Monday.
Luka Doncic Leads a Struggling Team
Doncic attempted to rally his team with an early scoring burst, but all of his points came in the first half. He exited after 27 minutes as the deficit widened. Veteran leaders like Marcus Smart and center Deandre Ayton, who had 11 points and five rebounds, were unable to lift the team.
Forward Jake LaRavia contributed 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Jarred Vanderbilt grabbed 18 rebounds, just one shy of his career high. Despite individual efforts, the Lakers could not recover from the Hawks’ dominance, especially with injuries continuing to plague the roster.
Hawks Capitalize on Lakers’ Injuries
The Hawks, playing the second game of a home back-to-back, were themselves shorthanded but still managed to control the game. Mouhamed Gueye led Atlanta with 21 points, including four three-pointers, on efficient shooting.
Even without stars like Trae Young, Kristaps Porzingis, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Atlanta’s squad exploited the Lakers’ depleted lineup, proving that injuries can drastically shift competitive balance in the NBA.
Lakers Coach JJ Redick Reacts
Redick was candid in his postgame comments:
“Just not a lot to like tonight. Nothing.”
He noted the team’s lack of energy was apparent within the first two minutes, despite an extra practice day and team-bonding activities leading up to the game. LaRavia emphasized that this loss is an outlier and not indicative of the Lakers’ overall identity:
“This game was an outlier of the first 10 games that we played. We have to just not let it break us and be ready to play the next game.”
Road Ahead for the Lakers
The Lakers are dealing with a series of setbacks, including LeBron James’ continued absence due to sciatica, which has kept the superstar off the court entirely this season. With their road trip underway and challenging matchups ahead, the team will need to lean on Doncic, Wembanyama, and other key players returning from injury to regain momentum.
The loss serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by injuries and the depth needed to navigate a long NBA season.
