Lando Norris Dominates Mexico City GP to Retake F1 Championship Lead

Mexico City, Mexico – October 26, 2025 – McLaren’s Lando Norris delivered a masterclass at the Mexico City Grand Prix, securing a commanding victory and reclaiming the Formula One drivers’ championship lead from teammate Oscar Piastri for the first time since April.

Starting from pole position, Norris led every lap at the Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit, navigating early chaos and holding off his rivals to finish first, with Charles Leclerc in second for Ferrari and Max Verstappen taking third for Red Bull. Norris now leads the championship by a single point, holding 357 points to Piastri’s 356, with Verstappen on 321 points and four rounds remaining in the 2025 season.

Norris Clinches Sixth Victory of the Season

“This was a straightforward race for me,” Norris said. “I focused on a clean start, a good first lap, and then just kept my eyes forward.” Despite boos from the home crowd, the Briton maintained composure throughout, marking his tenth career F1 win and sixth of the 2025 season, just one fewer than Piastri.

Piastri, who started seventh and had a 14-point lead at the start, finished fifth after a virtual safety car in the final laps denied him the chance to move higher. “It was about limiting the damage and learning from it,” the Australian said.

Rising Stars and Career-Best Performances

Haas rookie Oliver Bearman achieved a career-best fourth place, finishing just ahead of Piastri, while Kimi Antonelli, George Russell, and Lewis Hamilton rounded out the points, with Hamilton penalized 10 seconds for a track excursion that cost him a potential podium. Esteban Ocon and Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto completed the top ten.

Bearman described his race as a defensive battle: “I spent more time looking in my rearview mirrors than in front, but that’s sometimes how it has to be.” His result highlighted Haas’ growing competitiveness and marked a milestone for the US-owned team.

Constructors’ Championship and Strategies

McLaren remains the clear leader in the constructors’ championship, while Ferrari reclaimed second place, overtaking Mercedes by a single point. The top three drivers—Norris, Leclerc, and Verstappen—all executed a one-stop strategy, whereas Bearman, Piastri, and the Mercedes drivers pitted twice.

The race featured dramatic incidents, including a pit-lane scare with Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and a late contact between Verstappen and Hamilton, which resulted in Hamilton’s penalty. Despite these events, Norris maintained a calm race pace and controlled the championship momentum.

Championship Implications

With only four races remaining in the 2025 F1 season, the championship battle has intensified. Norris’ victory not only narrows Piastri’s lead but also keeps Verstappen within striking distance. Analysts predict that every point will be critical in the coming races as McLaren battles internally for the drivers’ crown.

The Mexico City GP 2025 will be remembered for Norris’ precision, Bearman’s breakthrough performance, and the continuing tension among McLaren teammates, setting the stage for a thrilling final stretch of the F1 season.
