Let’s Rethink School Closures

Recent decisions by Katsina, Plateau, and the federal government to close schools amid rising insecurity are deeply troubling. Shutting 41 Unity Schools nationwide signals surrender rather than solutions. If the government itself lacks confidence in the nation’s security, how can citizens feel safe?

Closing schools threatens Nigeria’s future. Schools are critical for socialization, discipline, and nurturing professionals—doctors, teachers, soldiers, and leaders. Keeping children at home will not reduce crime; it may worsen it, creating gaps in our social fabric.

Instead, the government should strengthen security, deploy resources, and safeguard students, ensuring education continues. Education is the foundation of national development, and compromising it jeopardizes the country’s long-term future.
