Liverpool Parade Attacker Jailed for 21½ Years

Paul Doyle, 54, has been sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison for driving his car into crowds at Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade on 26 May, injuring more than 130 people.

The ex-Royal Marine admitted 31 offences, including grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, and affray, targeting victims ranging from a six-month-old baby to a 77-year-old woman.

Judge Andrew Menary KC described Doyle’s actions as a “total disregard for human life” and said he drove in an “inexplicable and undiluted fury,” striking people repeatedly over a distance of Water Street.

Footage from dashcam and CCTV showed victims thrown onto the bonnet, trapped under the car, and hurled across the ground. Doyle claimed he acted in panic after seeing someone with a knife, but police found no evidence of a weapon or vehicle defects, and he was not under the influence.

Doyle’s rampage ended when Daniel Barr, a bystander, climbed into the moving vehicle and forced the automatic gear selector into park, preventing further injuries. Judge Menary formally commended Barr for his “outstanding bravery.”

The attacker had past convictions for serious violence in his youth but had been out of trouble for 30 years prior to the incident. Authorities said it was “sheer luck that no lives were lost” during the attack.
