Local Investor to Launch Multi-Million-Dollar Sugar Project in Taraba

The Lee Group, in collaboration with the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), is set to establish a multi-million-dollar sugar production facility in Taraba State, advancing Nigeria’s drive toward sugar self-sufficiency.

NSDC Executive Secretary and CEO, Kamar Bakrin, who led officials of the Lee Group to meet Governor Agbu Kefas, highlighted the council’s role in supporting investors through training, extension services, sugarcane research, financing, feasibility studies, and land access for sugar projects.

“Sugar is a critical socio-economic product globally, employing around 100 million people across 120 countries. Sugar estates, often located in rural areas, naturally drive local development without harming the environment,” Bakrin said.

He added that Taraba State met all technical and environmental criteria, making it one of the most promising locations for sugar investment in Nigeria. Bakrin also affirmed that the Lee Group, through its subsidiary GNAAL Sugar, met NSDC’s standards as a credible investor with the necessary financial strength and technical expertise.

Speaking to the governor, Lee Group Project Director Lam Wing Ki Wilkins expressed the group’s commitment to establishing the facility, noting that Taraba’s agricultural potential could boost both local and national economic growth.

Governor Kefas assured investors that the state has addressed prior security challenges and is now stable and safe for investments, urging them to take advantage of opportunities in sugar production, a priority in the state’s agricultural agenda.

The governor identified Kurmi, Lau, and Ibi Local Government Areas as ideal locations for large-scale sugar cultivation and processing projects.
