Long-Serving Russian Ambassador to North Korea Alexander Matsegora Dies at 70

Russia’s ambassador to North Korea, Alexander Matsegora, who spent decades fostering diplomatic ties with the reclusive state, has passed away at the age of 70. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced his death on December 6, 2025, praising Matsegora’s decades-long dedication to strengthening Moscow-Pyongyang relations.

Matsegora’s Diplomatic Career

Alexander Matsegora served as Russia’s ambassador to Pyongyang from 2014 until his death, having previously worked as an advisor at the Russian embassy and as deputy head of the Foreign Ministry’s Asia department. He was widely recognized as a skilled diplomat who played a pivotal role in advancing Russia-North Korea relations to levels not seen since the Soviet era.

During the Soviet period, Matsegora worked on trade and political relations between the USSR and North Korea, laying the groundwork for enduring bilateral cooperation. Under his leadership, the relationship between the two countries intensified, culminating in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang last year—the first Russian leader to visit in over two decades.

North Korean Response

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed condolences to President Vladimir Putin over Matsegora’s “sudden demise,” calling it a “heartrending event and a great loss.” Kim noted the timing was particularly significant as bilateral relations were entering a “crucial historic phase,” according to the state news agency KCNA.

North Korea’s foreign minister, Choe Son Hui, described Matsegora as a “precious comrade,” a “veteran diplomat of versatile talents,” and a “close friend of the DPRK people,” reflecting the high regard in which he was held in Pyongyang.

Strategic Importance of Russia-North Korea Relations

The passing of Matsegora comes at a time of heightened cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, particularly in the context of Russia’s ongoing military operations in Ukraine. Analysts report that North Korea has provided troops, military equipment, and logistical support to Russian forces, while receiving financial aid, military technology, energy supplies, and food in return.

This strategic partnership has allowed North Korea to navigate around stringent international sanctions imposed over its nuclear and missile programs. Experts note that the strengthening of diplomatic and military ties is partially attributed to Matsegora’s efforts over several decades.

The Russian Foreign Ministry hailed Matsegora as a “brilliant, talented man” who devoted his life to “selfless service to his homeland,” emphasizing the deep respect he earned in both Russia and North Korea. Moscow has not yet announced who will succeed him as ambassador.

Legacy of Alexander Matsegora

Matsegora leaves behind a legacy of decades-long diplomacy that reshaped Russia-DPRK relations. His tenure witnessed unprecedented cooperation, regular ministerial visits, and the fostering of strong personal and professional bonds with North Korean leadership. As Russia and North Korea continue to navigate international tensions and geopolitical challenges, Matsegora’s work will likely remain a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship.
