Los Angeles Rams’ Puka Nacua Apologizes for Antisemitic Gesture During Livestream

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua has issued a public apology after performing an antisemitic gesture during a livestream appearance. The 24-year-old NFL star, who joined the Rams in 2023, appeared with internet personalities Adin Ross and Mikyle Rafi when he enacted the controversial gesture.

In an Instagram statement, Nacua explained:

“When I appeared the other day on a social media livestream, it was suggested to me to perform a specific movement as part of my next touchdown celebration. At the time, I had no idea this act was antisemitic in nature and perpetuated harmful stereotypes against Jewish people. I deeply apologise to anyone who was offended by my actions, as I do not stand for any form of racism, bigotry or hate of another group of people.”

The Controversial Gesture and Social Media Backlash

During the livestream, Ross, who is Jewish, encouraged Nacua to use a touchdown celebration in which he rubs his hands together — a gesture historically used as an antisemitic stereotype to depict Jewish people as greedy. Nacua performed the gesture multiple times and promised Ross he would use it in a game.

The act sparked widespread criticism on social media, prompting responses from both fans and public figures. U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell criticized Nacua’s behaviour, stating that the player should “apologise or be dropped.”

NFL Response and Broader Implications

The NFL released a statement condemning Nacua’s actions, emphasizing its zero-tolerance policy for discrimination:

“The continuing rise of antisemitism must be addressed across the world. The NFL will continue to stand with our partners in this fight. Hatred has no place in our sport or society.”

Nacua’s livestream also included public criticism of referees — a move that could result in fines under NFL regulations. He is expected to address both the gesture and his comments on officiating following the Rams’ upcoming matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.

Nacua’s Career and Next Steps

Nacua, in his third season with the Rams, has quickly become a key player in Los Angeles’ offense. While the apology may help repair his public image, the incident highlights ongoing concerns about NFL players’ conduct on social media and the need for greater awareness around offensive gestures.

Analysts note that incidents like this underline the importance of cultural sensitivity and education for professional athletes, especially in high-profile leagues such as the NFL.
