Luis Suarez has confirmed he will remain at Inter Miami for the 2026 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, signing a one-year contract extension with the club. The former Uruguay international was a key figure in Miami’s historic 2025 campaign, helping them secure both the MLS Cup and the Supporters’ Shield.
Suarez’s Stellar 2025 Season
Suarez played a pivotal role in Inter Miami’s successes, scoring 17 goals and providing 17 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions. The 38-year-old striker helped Miami lift their first MLS Cup by defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps earlier this month, cementing his status as one of the league’s top performers.
Suarez also contributed significantly to Miami winning the Supporters’ Shield in his debut season, demonstrating his enduring quality even as he approaches his 39th birthday next month.
Reunion with Former Barcelona Teammates
Suarez first joined Inter Miami ahead of the 2024 season, reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. While Busquets and Alba retired following the MLS Cup triumph, Suarez has committed his future to Miami, joining Messi, who signed a contract extension until 2028 in October.
Controversies During MLS Career
Despite his on-field success, Suarez’s time in the MLS has not been without controversy. In August, he received a nine-game ban for spitting on a Seattle Sounders staff member during Miami’s League Cup final defeat.
Suarez’s disciplinary history extends beyond MLS, having faced:
- An eight-match ban from the English FA in 2011 for racially abusing Patrice Evra while at Liverpool.
- Three separate bans while playing for Ajax, Uruguay, and Liverpool due to biting incidents.
Inter Miami Strengthens Squad
In addition to retaining Suarez, Inter Miami has bolstered their squad by signing Sergio Reguilon, the former Tottenham and Real Madrid left-back, on a free transfer this week.
The club, co-owned by David Beckham, is aiming to maintain momentum from their historic 2025 season and continue competing at the top of MLS in 2026.
