Lyall Cameron Shines on Aberdeen Debut After Frosty Reception

Aberdeen midfielder Lyall Cameron admits he was prepared for a cold reception from Pittodrie fans after joining on loan from Rangers, but he quickly turned that initial hostility into applause.

A banner reading “No Old Firm loans” greeted him before Aberdeen’s Scottish Cup tie against Raith Rovers on Sunday. Yet, Cameron’s performance spoke for itself. After 83 minutes, he was substituted to warm cheers, having orchestrated the only goal of the game.

It was from Cameron’s corner that Jack Milne bundled in the winner, sending Aberdeen into the last 16. Beyond set-piece delivery, the 23-year-old impressed with his energetic midfield play, forward vision, and willingness to make things happen—qualities that had been missing in recent months at Pittodrie.

Strong Start on Loan

Cameron joined Rangers in the summer after a strong spell with Dundee but made just 10 appearances in the first half of the season. Speaking about his move to Aberdeen, Cameron said he wanted to remind people of his quality, and his performance against Raith Rovers suggested he is off to the right start.

Interim manager Peter Leven praised his debut as “excellent” and believes the midfielder will continue to improve. Cameron himself admitted he still needed to “dust off the cobwebs”, but his impact was clear.

Pundit Praise

BBC Scotland pundit James McFadden highlighted Cameron’s character and determination:

“The fact he made this move knowing what comes with it tells you a lot about his character. He’s brave, he will take the ball and attempt difficult things. He has great timing in his runs and is a goal threat. He’s a brilliant signing for Aberdeen.”

Cameron’s 14 goals and nine assists in the league last season underline the potential impact he could have as Aberdeen seek to climb the table. His influence in the Scottish Cup win is just the beginning, but if he maintains this form, even the most skeptical fans may be won over.
