Satara, Maharashtra: The police in Satara district have arrested Prashant Bankar, a software engineer, in connection with the death of a 29-year-old woman doctor who allegedly died by suicide on Thursday night. Authorities have stated that Bankar, the son of the landlord of the house where the doctor resided, had been in a personal relationship with the victim, which reportedly turned sour in recent months.
The deceased doctor, who was employed on a contractual basis as a medical officer in a government hospital in Phaltan, was found hanging in a hotel room in the town. Investigators recovered a note written on her palm in Marathi, which alleged that Phaltan City police sub-inspector Gopal Badane had sexually assaulted her four times, and that Prashant Bankar had subjected her to mental and physical harassment over five months.
Who is Prashant Bankar?
Police identified Bankar as the son of the landlord of the house where the doctor lived as a paying guest in Phaltan’s Vidyanagar area. According to investigators, Bankar allegedly harassed the doctor both mentally and physically, contributing to the circumstances leading up to her death.
Bankar was reportedly hiding at a friend’s farmhouse near Pune when he was apprehended late on Friday night. Police confirmed that the doctor and Bankar had maintained communication through calls and messages on October 23, a day before the incident, suggesting ongoing interactions in the days leading up to her death.
An officer involved in the investigation said, “Crucial evidence about the events leading up to her death may emerge following Bankar’s arrest.”
Investigation Details
The Phaltan police have indicated that Bankar is being interrogated, and additional arrests are possible as the inquiry progresses. Preliminary reports suggest that the doctor and Bankar’s relationship, which initially started as consensual, deteriorated, resulting in alleged harassment.
The victim’s family has also claimed that a local Member of Parliament (MP) attempted to influence the investigation through an intermediary, though the police have not officially confirmed this allegation.
Authorities are examining the note on the doctor’s palm as a crucial piece of evidence to understand the events leading to her death, including the alleged involvement of other individuals.
Background and Context
This case has brought attention to issues of harassment and mental distress among young professionals living away from home. The alleged suicide highlights the challenges faced by women working in high-pressure roles, particularly in small towns, and raises questions about the effectiveness of safeguards against abuse and harassment.
Police continue to investigate all angles, including the alleged role of the police sub-inspector mentioned in the note. Officials are expected to piece together communications, witness accounts, and digital evidence to determine the sequence of events leading to the tragic death.
Next Steps
The Satara police have emphasized that the interrogation of Prashant Bankar is ongoing and could provide new insights into the circumstances surrounding the doctor’s death. Investigators are also likely to question others who may have been connected to the victim or the accused to uncover the full story.
Authorities have urged the public to allow the investigation to proceed without speculation and reassured that all aspects of the case, including alleged harassment and possible criminal involvement, are being thoroughly examined.
The investigation is being closely monitored, and further developments are expected in the coming days as police work to piece together evidence and establish accountability in this tragic case.
