Makinde Discloses Rift with Wike Over 2027 Election

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has opened up about a major disagreement with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a media session on Tuesday, Makinde revealed that his issue with Wike arose during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu. According to the governor, Wike reportedly told the President that he would “hold PDP for him” in 2027—a statement Makinde said was made without consulting other party members.

“I was with President Tinubu and Wike, along with the Chief of Staff, when Wike said he would hold PDP for President Tinubu in 2027. I was shocked,” Makinde said. “So I asked him, ‘Wike, did we agree to this?’”

While acknowledging Wike’s right to support Tinubu, Makinde stressed that other members of the PDP also have a duty to protect democracy and ensure the party’s survival.

“Some of us want democracy to survive in Nigeria. We don’t want a one-party state, and we want to make sure PDP survives,” he added.

Makinde’s comments underscore ongoing tensions within the PDP ahead of the next general election, highlighting differing political strategies among key party figures.
