Malami, Son to Remain in Kuje Prison Until January 7

Former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, will remain in Kuje Prison until January 7, when the court is scheduled to decide on their bail applications.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order on Friday after hearing arguments for and against the bail applications. The Malamis are standing trial over a N9 billion money laundering charge brought by the Federal Government.

Alongside them, Hajia Bashir Asabe, a staff member of Ramadiya Property Limited, will also remain in detention until the bail ruling. Justice Nwite explained that, due to several other pending matters as a vacation judge, he would not be able to deliver the ruling earlier.

Joseph Daudu, SAN, represented the defendants in filing the bail applications, while Emmanuel Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, opposed the motion on behalf of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The defendants had earlier pleaded not guilty to all charges filed against them by the EFCC on behalf of the Federal Government.
