A 30-year-old nursing mother and her 10-month-old baby were brutally murdered and dumped in a well in Sheme village, located in the Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State. The horrific crime was allegedly the result of a paternity dispute between the victim and the suspects involved in the case.
Details of the Crime
According to the Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the suspects lured the woman, alongside her baby, to the outskirts of Sheme village. It was there that they murdered and burnt the bodies before throwing them into a well. The victim’s life and the life of her child were tragically cut short in what has been described as an extremely violent act.
Rabi’u, one of the prime suspects, a 35-year-old man, has been arrested by the police. During interrogation, Rabi’u reportedly confessed to carrying out the crime in collaboration with an accomplice who remains on the run. The authorities have launched a manhunt to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
Paternity Dispute as a Motive
Initial investigations by the police suggest that the motive behind the murder was a heated paternity dispute between the suspects and the victim. The tragic event underscores the devastating consequences of unresolved family conflicts.
In a statement, the Commissioner of Police for Katsina State, CP Bello Shehu, condemned the heinous act, calling it “barbaric and inhumane”. He reassured the public that the police would ensure that justice is served and that the investigation would be pursued rigorously until all those responsible are brought to justice.
Investigation and Public Appeal
The bodies of the deceased woman and her child have been recovered by the police. Efforts are currently underway to track down the second suspect involved in the murder. The police have urged residents and members of the public to come forward with any credible information that could assist in the arrest of the fleeing accomplice. The police assured that any information provided would be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
The police investigation continues, and authorities have vowed to leave no stone unturned as they seek justice for the innocent victims.
