Manchester United Women have strengthened their squad by signing Germany international forward Lea Schuller from Bayern Munich. The 28-year-old attacker, who is under contract with Bayern until 2029, becomes United’s second January transfer window signing, following the arrival of full-back Hanna Lundkvist.
Schuller’s Impressive Career
Schuller spent five seasons at Bayern Munich, making over 100 appearances and playing a key role in securing four Frauen-Bundesliga titles. She has also been a prolific scorer for the German national team, netting 54 goals in 82 appearances. Her international accolades include a runners-up medal at Euro 2022 and bronze at the 2024 Olympic Games.
In joining Manchester United, Schuller said:
“From the first conversations that I had with [manager] Marc [Skinner] and the club, the ambitions of everyone here were very clear. I still have so much that I want to achieve in my career, and I know that Manchester United is the perfect club to join. I feel that the team’s style of football will really suit my game. I hope my qualities and experience can help us to achieve our aims both in England and in the Champions League.”
United’s Vision and Squad Plans
Matt Johnson, Manchester United’s director of women’s football, highlighted Schuller’s quality and leadership:
“Lea’s goal-scoring record is phenomenal, and her style of play will give our attack an exciting new dimension. We are delighted to add a player of her pedigree to the group. Lea’s winning mentality and experience will really help our young and ambitious team as we continue to grow together and compete across domestic and European competitions.”
Manager Marc Skinner is looking to strengthen the squad for the knockout stages of the Women’s Champions League, with further activity expected in the January transfer window. United recently secured a contract extension with key midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who will now remain at the club until summer 2029, ensuring stability in the core of the team.
Impact on the Women’s Super League
Schuller’s arrival is set to bolster United’s attacking options in the Women’s Super League (WSL) and provide valuable experience in European competitions. With her proven goal-scoring ability and international pedigree, she will be expected to make an immediate impact as United push for domestic and continental success.
