Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted that it will be “impossible to replace” injured captain Bruno Fernandes, but stressed that his absence provides an opportunity for other players to step up.
Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s home game against Newcastle United, Amorim highlighted Fernandes’ importance to the team’s creative and organizational structure:
“It’s impossible to replace Bruno. A lot of people need to step up,” Amorim said on Wednesday.
Fernandes’ Injury and Expected Absence
Fernandes suffered a soft-tissue injury during the Premier League defeat at Aston Villa, being forced off at halftime in the 2-1 loss. The midfielder’s absence leaves United without their primary creative fulcrum and set-piece organizer, a role he has excelled in throughout the season.
Reports from The Times suggest United are hopeful Fernandes could return for the Manchester derby on January 17, 2026, though Amorim declined to confirm a return date.
“It’s not just about creation. On every set piece, he is the guy organizing the team. Losing him, along with Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, is massive for the team,” Amorim explained.
Mbeumo and Diallo are away representing their national teams at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, for Cameroon and Ivory Coast, respectively.
Adjustments in Midfield and Opportunities for Young Players
Nobody has created more chances in the Premier League this season than Fernandes. With his absence, Manchester United will need to restructure their midfield.
Amorim confirmed that Kobbie Mainoo will also miss the Newcastle game, leaving the team to rely on other talents.
“We maybe need to see different ways of playing. Jack Fletcher did a very good job, and this is an opportunity to give space to players like Jack and others,” Amorim said.
Both Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey, 18-year-olds, made their debuts against Villa and were praised for their professionalism. Amorim highlighted their maturity and dedication:
“The behaviour they showed during these weeks is really good. I don’t have the feeling that they think, ‘I’m a little bit different because I play for Man United.’”
Defensive Concerns for Newcastle Clash
Manchester United will also be without defenders Harry Maguire (hamstring) and Matthijs de Ligt (back) for the Newcastle game. Amorim commented:
“They are not available for this one. Let’s see for the next one.”
Despite injuries to key players, Amorim expressed confidence in the squad:
“It is more difficult, but I trust in my players. If we are really focused in the game, we can win.”
