Mary Njoku Says Creatives Must “Do Something Crazy” to Stand Out in Today’s Media Industry

Nollywood filmmaker Mary Remmy Njoku has expressed concerns over the changing dynamics of the media industry, noting that talent and hard work alone are no longer enough to gain widespread visibility.

Speaking as a panellist at NECLive 2025, Njoku reflected on her career and the challenges facing young creatives today. The founder of ROK TV Channels and head of ROK Studios explained that her own success came from identifying gaps in the entertainment sector and creating solutions, rather than chasing public attention.

However, she lamented that current media culture tends to reward shocking or extreme behaviour over genuine contributions, putting hardworking creatives at a disadvantage.

“I got rich by solving problems. If you want to blow right now, you can’t blow by doing good. You have to do something stupid or crazy right now. And it’s not fair on the very few people that are doing good,” Njoku said.

She encouraged emerging talents to focus on long-term impact, maintain integrity, and use their platforms responsibly, stressing that influence should be leveraged to uplift the industry and inspire meaningful change.

Njoku’s comments highlight the tension between hype-driven fame and substantive creativity in today’s entertainment landscape, offering both a caution and a call to action for upcoming media professionals.
