Meta Strikes 20-Year Nuclear Power Deals to Secure 6.6 GW of Energy

Meta Signs Long-Term Nuclear Power Agreements with Three Companies

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) announced on Friday that it has finalized 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with three nuclear operators in the U.S., including Vistra, and will help develop small modular reactors (SMRs) with Oklo and TerraPower.

The deals mark one of the largest corporate commitments to nuclear energy in U.S. history, securing up to 6.6 gigawatts (GW) of power by 2035—roughly equivalent to six large nuclear plants.

Details of the Nuclear Agreements

Meta will purchase electricity from Vistra’s Perry and Davis-Besse plants in Ohio and the Beaver Valley plant in Pennsylvania. The agreements are expected to:

  • Support plant expansion and upgrades
  • Extend the operational lifespan of these reactors, licensed through at least 2036, with one Beaver Valley reactor licensed to 2047
  • Help Meta meet growing electricity demand from AI and data centers, the first significant increase in U.S. corporate power needs in two decades

Meta’s previous nuclear agreement with Constellation Energy to keep an Illinois reactor operating for 20 years further strengthens its position as a major corporate nuclear buyer.

Partnerships for Small Modular Reactor Development

Meta’s collaboration with Oklo and TerraPower focuses on next-generation SMRs, which are smaller, factory-built reactors designed to reduce construction costs and deployment timelines.

  • Oklo: Meta will help develop up to 1.2 GW in Ohio by 2030, funding early procurement and development.
  • TerraPower: Meta will support two reactors generating up to 690 MW by 2032, with rights to energy from up to six additional reactors by 2035.

TerraPower, backed by billionaire Bill Gates, aims to deploy SMRs as a cost-efficient, scalable nuclear solution. While critics note that SMRs may struggle to match economies of scale of traditional reactors, proponents see them as critical to meeting future energy demand.

Corporate Nuclear Energy: Strategic and Environmental Impact

Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, highlighted that these deals, combined with prior agreements, will make Meta “one of the most significant corporate purchasers of nuclear energy in American history.”

The move underscores the strategic importance of stable, low-carbon energy for AI-driven data centers and positions Meta as a leader in corporate investment in clean nuclear power.

Shares of Oklo surged nearly 20% in premarket trading, while Vistra rose about 8%, reflecting market optimism over Meta’s long-term nuclear commitments.

Meta’s Nuclear Energy Highlights:

  • Total energy secured: 6.6 GW by 2035
  • Long-term PPAs: 20 years
  • Key partners: Vistra, Oklo, TerraPower
  • Goal: Support AI data centers and reduce carbon footprint
  • SMRs: Early-stage development, factory-built reactors
