Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, has set aside N252 million in its 2026 budget for the purchase of three luxury vehicles for the Pro-Chancellor and two principal officers, according to a review of the university’s budget documents by SaharaReporters. This implies an average expenditure of N84 million per vehicle.
The vehicle allocation forms part of a broader administrative and infrastructure spending plan outlined in the university’s 2026 budget. Other notable allocations include N96 million for the completion and furnishing of the Chancellor’s lodge and N21 million for the Pro-Chancellor’s lodge.
The budget also provides for capital development projects, such as perimeter fencing for N105 million and multiple road construction initiatives. These include:
- Oloko–Amizi Road (Section II), 7.5 km – N350 million
- Nkukunmiri Ala Ala–Okeuzo Oloko Road – N210 million
- Ogbuebulle Oloko Road, 4.5 km – N140 million
- Amuzu Road, 1.1 km – N140 million
These projects highlight the university’s extensive expenditure plans for 2026, covering both administrative luxuries and infrastructural development.
The report also draws parallels with other Nigerian universities, noting that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), spent over N1 billion on honoraria, stipends, and refreshments in 2024, compared with only N83 million on direct teaching and laboratory costs, underscoring a trend of high non-academic spending in tertiary institutions.
