Minneapolis Protests Erupt After ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Woman

A federal ICE agent fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday during the Trump administration’s latest immigration crackdown, sparking protests, school closures, and national outrage.

Victim Identified

The woman, Renee Nicole Macklin Good, 37, was a mother of three. She was shot in the head while driving her SUV in a snowy residential neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis. The incident occurred in front of a family member.

Macklin Good’s ex-husband described her as a compassionate, devoted Christian and a loving mother. Her mother called her “extremely compassionate” and “an amazing human being.”

Controversial Circumstances

Trump administration officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, claimed the shooting occurred after Macklin Good “attempted to run over ICE officers” and acted in self-defense. Video footage and statements from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey contradict that account.

“Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly, that is bull****,” said Frey, criticizing the federal deployment of more than 2,000 officers to the Twin Cities.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also condemned the shooting, calling it “totally predictable” and “totally avoidable.”

Protests and Public Reaction

Protests erupted immediately at the scene, with demonstrators chanting, “Shame! Shame!” and “ICE out of Minnesota!” Some were met with chemical munitions from heavily armed federal agents. Snap protests also occurred in other US cities.

Minneapolis Public Schools canceled classes and activities Thursday and Friday citing safety concerns.

US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar condemned the shooting as reckless, writing, “You’re lying. There was no attempt to run the officer over and no ICE agents appear to be hurt. Get out of our city.”

Incident Details

According to witnesses, Macklin Good was attempting to leave when the ICE agent shot her. Video and testimony indicate she was driving slowly, and paramedics performed CPR at the scene before transporting her to a hospital.

Federal authorities, including the FBI, are investigating the incident. DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin claimed the officer fired “defensive shots” fearing for his life.

President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, labeled Macklin Good a “professional agitator” and blamed the situation on the “radical left,” though no evidence has been presented.

Broader Context

The shooting comes amid a significant ramp-up in immigration enforcement by the Trump administration. Minneapolis and St Paul are part of a series of recent ICE operations targeting Somali American communities amid allegations of federal subsidy fraud.

  • Media outlet The Trace has documented 28 incidents where federal agents fired or brandished weapons during immigration enforcement operations.
  • ICE has received $75 billion in funding over four years, making it one of the best-resourced federal law enforcement agencies in the US.
