MMA2 to Introduce Structured Slot System to Boost Terminal Efficiency in 2026

Operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), have announced plans to introduce a structured slot system in 2026 aimed at improving operational efficiency and managing increasing flight demand.

The Head of Aeronautics and Cargo Services and Acting Chief Operating Officer, Remi Jibodu, said the new framework is designed to better align aircraft movements with terminal capacity, reduce congestion during peak periods, improve on-time performance for airline partners, and support more effective planning by ground handling companies.

Speaking in an interview, Jibodu explained that the initiative forms part of BASL’s broader strategy to strengthen operational reliability, enhance service standards, and deliver a consistent passenger experience during high-demand periods.

“In 2026, MMA2 will introduce a structured slot system to balance demand and capacity across the airport terminal,” he said.

Jibodu noted that MMA2 recorded a successful year-end operational period, reflecting strong collaboration with airlines, ground handlers, and other service providers during the festive season. Despite high passenger volumes, the terminal maintained smooth operations with a focus on passenger comfort, safety, and service continuity.

To minimise disruptions, MMA2 extended operational hours beyond scheduled shutdown times to accommodate late-night and delayed flights, while routine maintenance activities continued to ensure safety and infrastructure integrity.

He added that additional operational and ground support measures were deployed during the peak period, enabling efficient passenger processing, seamless baggage handling, and minimal delays.

Reviewing the terminal’s year-end performance, Jibodu said the experience underscored the importance of structured coordination among all stakeholders. He noted that the planned slot system aligns with MMA2’s wider optimisation strategy and global best practices in apron and airside management.

Beyond aeronautical operations, MMA2 also recorded strong performance in non-aeronautical services.

The Acting Chief Operating Officer and Head of Space and Premises Management, Kola Bamigboye, said 2025 was marked by innovation and improvements across customer-focused services.

“From retail and concession management to enhanced passenger amenities, our objective has been to deliver a convenient and engaging terminal environment. We are well-positioned to sustain this momentum in 2026,” Bamigboye said.

He added that security and passenger-support systems were also strengthened. Improved CCTV infrastructure facilitated the recovery and return of several lost items, earning positive feedback from passengers.

MMA2 also maintained an active customer experience email channel throughout the festive period to ensure timely acknowledgment and resolution of complaints.

As operations stabilise in the new year, the terminal plans to consolidate recent gains and deepen collaboration with airlines, ground handlers, regulators, and other stakeholders.

According to BASL, these measures position MMA2 for a strong and coordinated operational year in 2026, reinforcing its reputation as a reliable aviation hub and a model for private-sector-led airport terminal management in Nigeria.
