Labour Party governorship candidate Dr. George Moghalu has expressed concerns over alleged vote buying and low voter turnout during the ongoing Anambra State election.
Speaking to journalists after voting at Uruagu Ward 1, Nnewi, Moghalu linked voter apathy to a lack of confidence in the electoral process. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the credibility of the polls.
“It is too early to make a definitive statement on whether the election is free and fair. We will monitor the process closely before drawing conclusions,” he said.
Moghalu acknowledged some improvements compared to previous elections but criticized the monetization of the voting process, describing it as a manipulation of poverty. He also noted the continued trend of low voter turnout.
“There’s no doubt voter participation is low. INEC must continue to enhance the process to address voter apathy, which remains the main challenge,” he added.
While he did not report any technical issues at the polling units at the time of speaking, Moghalu stressed that ongoing observation is needed to assess the integrity of the elections fully.
