Doha, Qatar – Morocco secured their second FIFA Arab Cup title with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Jordan in the final, highlighted by a jaw-dropping goal from Oussama Tannane struck from inside his own half. The Lusail Stadium erupted in the fourth minute as Tannane, who plays for Umm Salal in the Qatar Stars League, launched a strike from an estimated 59 metres, catching Jordanian goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila off guard and setting the tone for the match.
A Thrilling Back-and-Forth Final
Jordan, the runners-up at the 2025 AFC Asian Cup, fought back quickly. Ali Oliwan equalized three minutes into the second half with a precise header from a well-worked corner. Jordan then went ahead for the first time after Oliwan converted a penalty in the 68th minute, awarded when Mahmoud Almardi’s shot struck the hand of Morocco’s Achraf El Mahdioui in the box.
Morocco refused to surrender. Abderrazak Hamdallah, a second-half substitute, tapped in the equalizer in the 88th minute after a scramble from a corner, pushing the game into extra time. Oliwan had a golden opportunity to win the match for Jordan with the final kick of normal time but was denied by Abulaila.
Extra Time Drama and Controversy
Extra time saw Morocco dominating once more. Jordan thought they had scored through Mohannad Abutaha, but VAR overturned the goal for a handball. The winning goal eventually came from Hamdallah, who capitalized on a bicycle kick by Marwane Saadane to secure the 3-2 victory for Morocco.
Morocco previously won the 2012 Arab Cup, defeating Libya in the final staged in Saudi Arabia. With this latest triumph, the Atlas Lions succeed Algeria, who claimed the title in 2021 after beating Tunisia.
Morocco Looks Ahead
Having made history as the first African nation to reach a FIFA World Cup semifinal in 2022, Morocco will now turn its focus to hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The squad is expected to be strengthened by several European-based stars who were unavailable for the Arab Cup due to club commitments.
The 2025 FIFA Arab Cup also set new attendance records, selling over one million tickets, doubling the number sold at the previous edition four years ago.
