Mothers who lost their children in Jhalawar school tragedy find hope with reverse sterilisation

Two mothers who suffered the heartbreaking loss of their children in the tragic collapse of a government school in Piplodi, Jhalawar, are now being given a chance to regain motherhood through sterilisation reversal surgery, offering a ray of hope amid their grief. The school tragedy, which occurred on July 25, 2025, claimed the lives of seven children and left 28 others injured, some critically, as students were assembling for morning prayers.

Binti Bai and Raju Bai, both of whom had previously undergone sterilisation under the state family welfare initiative, were directly affected by the calamity. Raju Bai lost her son Kartik, while Binti Bai tragically lost both her son Kanha and daughter Meena. The emotional trauma and grief following the incident plunged the two mothers into deep shock and depression, making the path to recovery particularly challenging.

Dr Sajid Khan, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Jhalawar, explained that psychological support was provided to both women, alongside counselling sessions to help them cope with the loss of their children. The medical team encouraged them to consider recanalisation—a complex procedure that reverses sterilisation and restores the possibility of conception. “Recanalisation is performed in the rarest of the rare cases, and we chose to conduct it in Jhalawar to offer hope to the families affected by the tragedy,” Dr Khan said.

The initiative to provide sterilisation reversal surgeries was prompted by former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and MP Dushyant Singh, who visited the bereaved families following the tragedy. They instructed the district collector to ensure that the two mothers could undergo the procedure and regain an opportunity for motherhood. Acting on these instructions, District Collector Ajay Singh Rathore directed Dr Khan to assemble a medical team to evaluate the women and plan their surgeries.

Raju Bai underwent her recanalisation surgery last month at Heera Bai Kanwar Women’s Hospital in Jhalawar. Her operation marked a significant step in helping her regain a sense of hope and purpose following the loss of her child. Following this, Binti Bai successfully underwent her surgery on Wednesday, performed by Dr Madhurima Verma and her team at the same hospital.

In addition to the surgeries, both women will have access to advanced IVF facilities in Kota and Jaipur, as arranged under the guidance of the district administration. This step is intended to maximize their chances of conceiving in the future, offering a tangible way for them to rebuild their lives after an unimaginable tragedy.

Dr Khan highlighted that such procedures are rare and generally reserved for exceptional circumstances. The decision to conduct these surgeries in Jhalawar was a deliberate effort to bring hope and comfort to families devastated by the school collapse. He emphasised that the medical team was dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of care, from psychological counselling to surgical expertise, to support the two mothers through this emotionally and medically challenging process.

The initiative has been welcomed as a compassionate response to an unprecedented tragedy, reflecting the district administration’s commitment to addressing the long-term emotional and social consequences faced by families. Through recanalisation and access to assisted reproductive technologies, Binti Bai and Raju Bai are being given a unique opportunity to experience motherhood once again, helping them navigate a path of healing after their profound personal loss.
