In a shocking incident that unfolded in Mumbai’s Borivali West, a night of partying between friends took a dangerous turn when a 32-year-old man allegedly drove his car with a woman clinging to the bonnet after a heated argument. The man, identified as Vinit Ghiya, has been arrested for rash driving and assault after the woman fell from the moving vehicle and sustained injuries.
According to the police, the accused and the victim, a spa employee, were acquaintances who had gone partying at a pub in the city’s western suburbs on Wednesday night. What began as a seemingly ordinary night of socializing ended in chaos and criminal charges by the following morning.
The Argument Turns Violent
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, around 6 a.m., after the group’s party had ended. Ghiya, who was reportedly driving his friends home, offered to drop the woman at her residence as well. However, after he dropped off the others, an argument broke out between him and the woman inside the car.
According to reports, the dispute began when the woman received a phone call, and Ghiya allegedly became aggressive. He is said to have snatched her phone during the argument, leading to a scuffle between them. The woman later told police that Ghiya verbally abused her and physically assaulted her during the altercation.
When the confrontation escalated, the woman reportedly got out of the vehicle in protest and sat on the bonnet, apparently demanding that her phone be returned. Instead of stopping, however, Ghiya allegedly accelerated the car, driving recklessly with the woman still on the bonnet. Witnesses told police that he drove at high speed for several meters before the woman lost her balance and fell onto the road.
A Dangerous Act Captured on CCTV
The incident was captured on nearby CCTV cameras, which later became key evidence in the police investigation. The footage reportedly shows Ghiya’s vehicle speeding through the area with the woman on the bonnet, confirming the victim’s version of events. After she fell to the ground, Ghiya allegedly fled the scene without offering help.
Local residents who witnessed the fall rushed to assist the injured woman and took her to a nearby hospital. She sustained multiple injuries but is currently out of danger, according to the police.
Both Had Been Drinking
Investigators revealed that both Ghiya and the woman were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. “Preliminary reports indicate that both parties had consumed alcohol. The altercation appears to have been triggered by a personal dispute after the party,” said a police official from Borivali Police Station.
The police added that while alcohol may have played a role in escalating tempers, the accused’s actions went beyond reckless behavior. Driving with a person on the bonnet at high speed, they said, posed a serious threat to life and could have resulted in a fatal accident.
Arrest and Legal Action
After the woman’s complaint, the police traced Ghiya’s whereabouts using CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts. He was arrested from his residence and charged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including those pertaining to rash and negligent driving, assault, and endangering human life.
He was produced before a local court on Saturday, which remanded him to police custody until Sunday for further investigation. “We have strong evidence, including CCTV footage and witness statements,” an investigating officer said. “The accused’s actions were highly irresponsible and put another person’s life at grave risk.”
Ongoing Investigation
Police sources said they are verifying the sequence of events leading up to the argument and examining whether any additional charges may apply. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from the pub and nearby areas to confirm the movements of both individuals prior to the incident.
The woman has since recorded her statement, alleging that Ghiya not only assaulted her but also deliberately drove the vehicle to intimidate her. “He was angry and not in control. I was scared for my life,” she told officers during questioning.
Authorities are awaiting medical reports to determine the extent of her injuries and the level of intoxication of both parties. The results will play a role in the final charges filed against Ghiya.
Community Reaction
Residents of Borivali West expressed outrage over the recklessness displayed in the incident. “It could have ended in tragedy,” said a local shopkeeper who witnessed the aftermath. “People were shocked to see a woman lying on the road early in the morning. It’s terrifying how a personal argument can lead to something so dangerous.”
The case has also sparked debate about road safety and alcohol consumption in urban nightlife settings. Experts have often pointed out that Mumbai, despite its nightlife revival, still struggles with issues of drunk driving and personal safety after late-night parties. The police have reiterated that strict action will continue against those found driving under the influence.
A Pattern of Reckless Behavior
While this case has gained attention for its dramatic nature, officials note that incidents of rash driving linked to alcohol consumption have been rising in Mumbai’s western suburbs. “There’s a worrying trend where personal disputes, coupled with intoxication, lead to impulsive and violent behavior on the roads,” said a senior officer. “We’ve seen several cases where arguments after parties or gatherings have escalated into dangerous driving incidents.”
Police have emphasized that such behavior will not be tolerated. “Driving a car with a person on the bonnet is not just illegal — it is potentially lethal,” an official stated. “The accused’s decision to speed off in anger could have easily cost someone their life.”
What Lies Ahead
As the investigation continues, police are piecing together the timeline of events, from the party at the pub to the moment of the crash. Ghiya’s phone and car have been seized for forensic examination, and officers are analyzing digital evidence, including call logs and messages exchanged between the two before the incident.
The woman remains under medical supervision and is expected to make a full recovery. Her statement, combined with the CCTV footage, is likely to form the backbone of the prosecution’s case.
Meanwhile, the authorities have urged citizens to exercise restraint and responsibility, especially when alcohol is involved. “Disagreements happen, but reckless actions can destroy lives in seconds,” said a senior police official. “This incident should serve as a reminder of the importance of self-control, respect, and road safety.”
For now, Vinit Ghiya remains in custody as investigators continue to build their case. What began as a night of social celebration ended in violence, injury, and arrest — a grim example of how anger and recklessness can turn a momentary argument into a life-threatening crime.
