My Mum Didn’t Want Me to Play Basketball – BBNaija Star Kaybobo

Former Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) Season 10 housemate, Kayode Oladele (popularly known as Kaybobo), shared a personal story during an interaction with the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Ado-Ekiti. He revealed that his mother initially opposed his passion for basketball until his coach, Tayo Awojurin, convinced her of its importance.

Kaybobo’s Early Basketball Journey

Kaybobo, who hails from Ado-Ekiti, spoke about his childhood love for basketball and how he played for Christ School and All Souls Secondary School in Ado-Ekiti. His journey into the sport not only helped him gain recognition in Nigeria but also opened doors to international opportunities. He credited his success to the unwavering support of his coach, Tayo Awojurin, whose mentorship helped him transition from local success to international recognition.

Kaybobo’s Youth Foundation & Community Impact

Kaybobo announced his commitment to supporting Ekiti youths through his Kaybobo Youth Foundation. The foundation’s goal is to encourage and develop young talents, particularly in sports, but also in areas like fashion, entertainment, and arts.

He stated:

“I am assuring every youth in Ekiti who wishes to play basketball that I am going to support them to become professional players and sports personalities.”

Kaybobo emphasized the importance of parents giving their children unconditional support to pursue sports, just as his coach had convinced his mother to support his basketball dreams.

The Importance of Support in Sports

Reflecting on his own experience, Kaybobo said:

“My mummy did not want me to play basketball then, it was through the intervention of Coach Awojurin that convinced her, if not I would not have reached the level I am today.”

This resonates with his broader message that success in sports, or any creative venture, requires not just individual talent, but also the support of those around you.

Partnership with SWAN Ekiti

As part of his commitment to nurturing talent, Kaybobo gave 20 customized caps to SWAN members in Ekiti and pledged to continue collaborating with the association to develop sports in the state. The Chairman of SWAN, Qozeem Oladapo, thanked Kaybobo for his gesture and assured him of the association’s full support in his mission.
