The Nigerian Bar Association Anti-Corruption Committee (NBAA-CC) has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting corruption in Nigeria as it joins the global community in marking Anti-Corruption Day on December 9, 2025.
In a statement signed by NBAA-CC Chairman Babafemi Badejo, the committee highlighted the importance of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) and stressed that full domestication and rigorous implementation of its provisions should be a national priority.
Badejo emphasized the critical role of the judiciary in tackling corruption, noting support for the Chief Justice of Nigeria’s commitment to the Rule of Law. “The rule of law is the most potent weapon against corruption. However, it cannot be fully realized with the current level of corruption in Nigeria,” he said, pledging collaboration with all arms of government, civil society, and legal practitioners to turn intentions into tangible results.
To strengthen grassroots anti-corruption efforts, NBAA-CC has established committees in all state branches. These committees are working to promote accountability, support whistleblowers, and facilitate the prosecution of corruption cases.
Several branches have already taken concrete steps:
- Idemili Branch, Anambra State: Recognizing court registrars for efficiency and integrity.
- Kaduna and Barnawa Branches: Collaborating with national agencies like the EFCC, NSCDC, and NDLEA, while raising public awareness through radio and TV programs in Hausa and English.
- Ikorodu Branch: Active in advocacy campaigns.
The committee warned that corruption “is not normal and must never become a trend,” describing it as a destructive force that undermines justice, development, and security.
NBAA-CC called on Nigerians from all sectors to reject apathy and actively support anti-corruption initiatives. “We are ready to work with all. The time for collective action, fortified by the law and driven by integrity, is now,” the statement concluded.
