The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has announced plans to introduce a decentralised AI and machine learning system across Nigerian polytechnics, aimed at democratizing access to emerging technologies despite connectivity challenges.
Key points:
- NBTE will host an international conference in Abuja from Nov. 25–27, 2025 to unveil the system.
- The platform features 46 custom-built AI and machine learning models, developed in collaboration with Kombolcha Polytechnic (Ethiopia), Nigerian institutions, and MOC-LLC (USA).
- The AI models will be distributed as Linux-based ISO files for easy installation on internal networks, allowing polytechnics to run simulators, research libraries, and classroom tools without relying on the internet.
- The system uses open-source technologies like Linux, Apache2, and MySQL, ensuring low-cost implementation and wide accessibility.
- NBTE will establish an intranet-based AI and ML Research Library Hub in Abuja, maintained by MOC-LLC, for ongoing model updates and resources.
- The initiative aims to strengthen applied engineering, AI, data-driven innovation, and technical workforce development in sectors such as agriculture, security, engineering, and manufacturing.
- The platform also supports interdisciplinary learning, equipping students with skills in machine learning, AI, applied statistics, and advanced linear algebra.
The Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, encouraged polytechnic rectors and lecturers to fully implement the system to enhance teaching quality, applied research, and national technical capacity.
