The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has enhanced its maritime surveillance and interdiction capabilities after a training visit to the United Kingdom.
A six-man team from NDLEA’s Directorate of Seaport Operations, led by Deputy Commander Narcotics Aminu Danjuma Jega, participated in a week-long program from 19–25 October 2025, engaging with UK Border Force, National Crime Agency (NCA), Home Office Intelligence, and maritime security centers.
The training included:
- Advanced container targeting techniques
- Vessel rummage operations
- Risk-based port inspections
- Exposure to the Advanced Sea Searcher System for underwater detection of concealed contraband
A follow-up five-day residential training in Lagos involved 19 additional officers, further enhancing practical skills in maritime intelligence and port security.
NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) commended the officers, emphasizing that the lessons learned will strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security, improve inter-agency coordination, and enhance intelligence-led drug interdiction operations.
“Maritime routes remain critical in global drug trafficking networks. Strengthening our officers’ technical capacity and intelligence integration with our international partners is essential to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders,” Marwa said.
The Agency plans to continue collaboration with international partners to combat transnational organized crime and drug trafficking.
