The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has successfully restored 450 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity to the national grid following the completion of scheduled maintenance at the Geregu NIPP plant.
The four-week minor inspection, carried out by Siemens Energy, aimed to enhance the plant’s operational reliability, efficiency, and lifespan, extending its Equivalent Operating Hours (EOH).
“This restoration is part of our continuous efforts to recover dormant generation units and strengthen the national power supply,” said NDPHC Managing Director/CEO Jennifer Adighije.
Recovery of Dormant Gas Turbines
Over the past year, NDPHC has recovered six previously dormant gas turbines across its fleet, significantly boosting available generation capacity. The units restored include:
- GT4 at Calabar NIPP
- GT1 at Omotosho II
- GT1 & GT2 at Benin NIPP
- GT4 at Sapele NIPP
- GT3 & GT4 at Alaoji NIPP (currently on standby pending gas supply remediation)
Together, these restored turbines provide an additional 875MW to the national grid.
Other Initiatives and Projects
NDPHC has also commenced restoration of the 225MW Gbarain NIPP plant, out of service since 2020, aimed at supporting commercial and industrial clusters in the Niger Delta region.
Additional milestones include:
- Recovery of 110 containers of turbine and HRSG components abandoned at Onne Port for over nine years
- Light Up Nigeria – Agbara industrial cluster project, connecting Agbara Industrial Estate to the grid
- A 10MW embedded solar project in Kano
- Completion of key transmission and distribution projects in Borno and Delta States
- Completion of Afam–Ikot Ekpene 330kV double-circuit transmission lines
Financially, NDPHC recovered over $10 million in legacy debts and secured $15 million in insurance claims for the Alaoji plant fire incident. The company also amended its gas supply agreement with ACCUGAS, reducing government exposure.
Staff Welfare and Operational Reforms
To strengthen accountability and staff performance, NDPHC introduced:
- A procurement benchmarking desk
- Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for staff performance management
- Management support allowances to mitigate impacts from fuel subsidy removal
“Our focus remains on restoring dormant capacity, stabilizing operations, and supporting Nigeria’s goal of a reliable and sustainable power supply,” said Engr. Adighije.
NDPHC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and stakeholder engagement as it continues efforts to unlock universal electricity access for businesses and households across Nigeria.
